Welcome to Fairview Baptist Church.
As pastor of this vibrant church let me try to put into words something of the rich experience of Christian community that we enjoy. Here are some key points that will hopefully answer some questions you might have about us:
- Fairview Church is like a small village, with a great diversity of ages, ethnicities, styles and visions for the spiritual life.
- Our worship, though informal, tends towards the more traditional expressions of liturgy, usually featuring congregational hymns, as well as anthems from our choir. Our music is often accompanied by our orchestra or by instrumental soloists.
- Prayer is the foundation from which we understand the Christian life. We feature a monthly Contemplative Service (first Saturday of each month) as well as retreats and seminars for the encouragement of the practice of prayer.
- As a church we are in dialogue with a variety of social issues that we are forming relationship to. Our Church is a partnered with the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America as well as with the Metro Vancouver Alliance through which we explore and advocate for Christian justice locally as well as globally. Through our denomination we are also partnered with Canadian Baptist Ministries, which includes the Sharing Way which responds to those in need.
- We are committed to the encouragement and nurturing of our children and offer regular Sunday School for those under High School age. Our Youth Group also meets regularly and are an important part of our community life.
- The arts, in many forms, are a natural expression of our community. Besides our choir, we also have a small orchestra of string and wind players who accompany us at our monthly Communion services (first Sunday of each month). Our Celtic group perform regularly at our Coffee Houses, picnics and outreach events, and are sometimes featured in our worship service. We also host a weekly drop-in painting group which exhibits original work in the permanent art gallery we have in our lounge. Drama or “scripted sermons” are also an important part of our communication of the gospel. Our Youth Group has formed its own Drama Team which creates, produces and performs plays for special occasions.
- We have a variety of Bible study or Spiritual Direction groups that meet in homes around the city using either the sermon series or the works of various authors as a curriculum for deeper study and fellowship.
As pastor I am committed to the individual Christian. I am trained in spiritual direction and regularly meet one-on-one with congregants for the encouragement of their spiritual growth. I’ve included below the “statement of purpose” that appears on our weekly bulletin.
If you are looking for the encouragement of a healthy Christian community I would invite you to come and visit us. We would love to share the good life we are enjoying at Fairview with you.
Do feel free to contact me at the church if you have any other questions or would like to arrange to meet. Blessings,
Rob Des Cotes

Fairview Baptist Church has served Vancouver since 1905. We believe that we have been called together as a community of faith to bring glory to God through worship, by caring for and encouraging others in love, by introducing people to a relationship with Jesus, by committing to the will of God in our lives, and by serving those beyond ourselves.
